Source: Distilled from the large, fragrant and furry leaves of the patchouli plant, which can grow to heights of 3-4 ft.
Description of Plant: It is a bushy perennial herb. It has a sturdy stem, soft hairy leaves and white with a tinge of mauve flowers in a terminal spikes.
Where Cultivated: It is native to Southeast Asia and now cultivated in India, Indonesia, Seychelles and China.

BASE NOTE: A rich, lingering aroma that develops slowly on the skin; acts as a grounding element for lighter notes that may dissipate quickly.

DESCRIPTION:
Patchouli is a bush from which the oil is steam distilled from the large furry leaves to produce a thick, dark oil, yellowish brown in color. Its main active principles are patchoulene, patchoulol and norpatchoulol. The patchoulene is very similar in structure to azulene (found in chamomile) and has the same anti-inflammatory properties. The plant has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine as a stimulant, tonic and antiseptic. It is widely used in the perfume industry as a fixative due to its long lasting character. Patchouli continues to get better with age. Some of its countries of origin are Malaysia, Indonesia, and Paraguay.

Patchouli has long been known as a fungicide, antidepressant and insecticidal oil as well as being antiseptic and anti-inflammatory in nature. This makes it useful in treating many different skin conditions; especially when you consider that Patchouli may also possess the same cell regenerating ability as Lavender and Neroli (cytophylactic). Patchouli can be used for treating acne, cracked skin, certain types of eczema, fungal infections (athletes’ foot), some skin allergies and even dandruff.

Patchouli became famous during the 1960s in the United States as a favorite scent of young counter-culture people, but it has been used as a scent in Asia for centuries. It is best known for its skin care applications. When added to a carrier oil, it can help with the appearance of skin wrinkles, scars, and skin blemishes and it’s a wonderful addition to a man’s deodorant formula. When diffused, Patchouli can help alleviate nervous tension and worry and is a soothing oil to diffuse during meditation.

It blends well with bergamot, cedarwood virginian, clove bud, copaiba balsam, cypress, geranium egyptian, lavender, myrrh, neroli, orange sweet, palmarosa, rose absolute, sandalwood australian, and vetiver.

DIRECTIONS:
Focus your mind during meditation by diffusing 1 drop of patchouli with 1 drop of sweet basil. Patchouli is very useful as part of a blend to combat shoe and foot odor. Fill an old tube sock with baking soda; add lemon and patchouli oils to baking soda and tuck sock into the shoe; leave for 12-24 hrs.

Aromatic - Diffuse using 3-4 drops per 100 ml of water or use in a personal inhaler.

Topical - Dilute 0.5-3% in a carrier.

Avoid eyes and mucous membranes; if contact occurs, rinse with vegetable oil. Do not use if pregnant/breastfeeding. If allergic reaction occurs, stop use and call a health care practitioner.
