Botanical Name: Myristica fragrans
Family Name: Myristicaceae
Country of Origin: Sri Lanka
Part of Plant Used: Kernels
Method of Extraction: Steam distillation
Scent: Sweet, spicy and warm

Source: Tropical evergreen tree that grows up to 24 meters (80 feet). The tree does not bear fruit until it is about seven or eight years old. These trees are either male or female. Usually there is one male per ten to twelve female trees in plantations with the result that they are known as harem trees. The tree produces yellowish flowers, which are followed by large yellow apricot or plum like fruits. When they split open they reveal the black seed (the nutmeg) wrapped in its red lacy aril (the mace). Both spices are dried separately.
Where Cultivated: Nutmeg is native to the Moluccas and cultivated in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and the West Indies.

BASE NOTE: A rich, lingering aroma that develops slowly on the skin; acts as a grounding element for lighter notes that may dissipate quickly.

DESCRIPTION:
Nutmeg is a tree from which the seed is steam distilled. Its active principles include camphene, dipentene, sabinene and borneol. Some of its countries of origin are Java, Sumatra, West Indies and Indonesia.

Nutmeg may assist with digestion, as it is a stimulant and it is good as an analgesic, helping with muscular and rheumatic pain. It may help with flatulence, nausea, indigestion, impotence, scanty periods, poor circulation, aches and pains.

Like many of the spice and herb oils, Nutmeg is very useful for the occasional queasy stomach and sluggish digestion. As a warming oil, it may be helpful in easing the achy joints which come from normal aging or wear and tear.

It blends well with cedarwood virginian, clary sage, cinnamon, clove bud, copaiba balsam, coriander seed, frankincense serrata, geranium egyptian, lemongrass, lime, marjoram sweet, orange, petitgrain, rosemary, sandalwood australian, tea tree, and vetiver.

DIRECTIONS:
Add Nutmeg to a carrier oil and rub in clockwise circles on the abdomen. Add a couple drops to an ounce of milk or teaspoon of carrier oil, then add that mixture to a ½ cup of Epsom salts in a warm bath to help soothe away aches.

Aromatic - Diffuse using 1-2 drops per 100 ml of water or use in a personal inhaler.

Topical - Dilute to a maximum of 0.8% in a carrier.

CAUTIONS:
Keep out of reach of children. For external use only. If swallowed, seek urgent care/call poison control. Do not use undiluted. Avoid eyes and mucous membranes; if contact occurs, rinse with vegetable oil. Do not use if pregnant/breastfeeding or on sensitive/inflamed skin or dermatitis. If allergic reaction occurs, stop use and call a health care practitioner. For prolonged use, consult a health care practitioner.

SPECIFIC CAUTIONS:
Maximum dilution of 0.8% for topical applications. Nutmeg, in high doses or over a long period of time, can cause mental or nervous disturbances.
