Birch essential oil is analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and helps to reduce fever, so it is good for rheumatic aches and pains but should be handled with caution. It is not recommended for total massage; however, it does have a place in aromatherapy for localized pain relief.

Where Cultivated: It is native to southern Canada and north-eastern USA, but also grow in Russia and part of Eastern Europe.
TOP NOTE: Fresh and light, top notes are often the first aromas to reach the nose and dissipate quickly.
DESCRIPTION:
Sweet Birch essential oil is from a tree (the yellow and black species of this genus). Some of its countries of origin are Canada, Holland, Germany and the eastern USA. The bark is macerated in warm water before being steam distilled to produce an essential oil that is clear to yellowish in color.
Birch essential oil contains one major constituent, methyl salicylate (up to 98%!), which was first identified in willow trees, and is more commonly known as the original ingredient in aspirin. Birch essential oil is analgesic, anti-inflammatory, diuretic and a blood cleanser. It is great for all kinds of muscular pain and, because of its diuretic and blood cleansing abilities, it helps to drain toxins, which cause the pain in arthritis and rheumatism.
In treating cellulite, it blends well with rosemary, geranium, black pepper, and juniper berry to help eliminate toxins, while the diuretic action helps reduce water retention.
It blends well with sweeter citruses, herbs and woody oils, and spicy oils.
CAUTIONS:
Keep out of reach of children. For external use only. If swallowed, seek urgent care/call poison control. Do not use undiluted. Avoid eyes and mucous membranes; if contact occurs, rinse with vegetable oil. Do not use if pregnant/breastfeeding or on sensitive/inflamed skin or dermatitis. If allergic reaction occurs, stop use and call a health care practitioner. For prolonged use, consult a health care practitioner.
SPECIFIC CAUTIONS:
Should not be used during pregnancy, while lactating or on babies and small children. Use sparingly.
